Following the narrow escape on July 20th last year, the following progress has been made in reducing the risks of further flooding in the future:

The Environment Agency (EA), which is responsible for the river and flood defences including the floodwall and the pumps by the church, has approved in principle a £775,000 Flood Alleviation Scheme which it hopes will start this summer and be completed by March 2009. The EA and the Parish Council are currently working on the scoping document for the project which will involve realigning the river to the east of Bascote Bridge and raising the flood wall by some 20cm.

Following a major camera mapping exercise last December by Severn Trent Water (STW), Warwickshire County Council (WCC) has finally succeeded in clearing all the drains in the area of the Church Road/Bascote Road junction and the river. In doing so, we have discovered that there is an incorrect and unapproved connection between the new sealed system servicing the Redrow estate and the road drains in Bascote Road. This is being vigorously pursued with STW who made the final connection from the Redrow system to the river.

The EA has agreed to clear the flotsam and jetsam from under and around the bridge and clear the access area and exits of the overflow pipes which are partially blocked by silt and rubbish.

Several tons of sand and sandbags are now permanently stored at both the Green Man and Whitehall Farm for use by any resident who might be threatened in the event of an emergency.

The Parish Council and a number of affected residents are now included in the EA’s flood alert scheme which provides warnings by phone and e-mail when extreme weather conditions are likely to cause local flooding.

Possible solutions for the problems in Stonebridge Lane are also being explored with the EA.

Villagers who have questions on any of the above are encouraged to attend the Annual Parish Meeting which will take place at 10.00am on Saturday 26th April in the Community Centre.
